In the peak of the Winter season, keeping your home warm while managing energy costs can be a challenge, especially for those with spot-price electricity contracts. Heat pumps offer an eco-friendly way to heat your home, they are probably also the most effective and efficient solution for winter heating. But by pairing them with strategies like temperature or real-time energy price control, you can lower your heating costs.

1. Keep your heat pump well maintained

Regular maintenance is always key to keeping your heat pump working effectively and efficiently. A well-maintained heat pump does not just improve its lifespan, it also consumes less energy. This ensures lower maintenance and electricity bills in the long run.

Keep the filters clean so they do not block airflow, which forces your system to work harder. It is also important to ensure the outdoor components of your heat pump are free of snow, ice, or clogged debris, which can obstruct performance in the winter.

2. Use the right temperature in your spaces

Heat pumps work best and save you money when kept at a steady, moderate temperature. For draft-free living areas, aim for 20–21 ºC, and for bedrooms, 18–20 ºC. Going higher than that can get expensive—just 1 ºC more can raise heating costs by 5%, according to studies. Stick to these guidelines for a cozy and cost-efficient home!

Recommended temperatures for home spaces in draft-free conditions:

  • living areas 20–21 ºC
  • bedrooms 18–20 ºC
  • stairwells in apartment buildings 17–18 °C
  • storage 12 ºC
  • garage 5 ºC
  • bathrooms 22–23 ºC

3. Utilize your heat pump zone control

If your heat pump has zoning capabilities, use this feature to focus the heating on the areas in your home you use the most. Concentrate your heating in living spaces during the day and bedrooms at night. Lower the temperature for areas that are rarely used. For example, the recommended temperature for your garage (which is not regularly used in the winter season) is 5 ºC. This reduces unnecessary energy use and helps to keep your electricity bills down.

4. Make the most of your spot-price contract

If you are on a spot-price electricity contract, you can save on your heat pump energy use by manually and slightly lowering the pump temperature when prices are high. Heat pumps can be cheaper to run if you adjust their use to align with off-peak electricity pricing.

You can run your heat pump to warm your home during cheaper hours, such as early morning or late at night. However, whether your home retains the heat effectively during peak hours depends on factors like insulation and the heat pump's efficiency. This approach works best in well-insulated homes, as poor insulation can lead to faster heat loss, requiring additional heating.

5. Optimize heat pump usage with smart apps

Many modern heat pumps can be paired with smart phone apps that allow you to easily adjust temperatures, set schedules, and even monitor energy use at your fingertips. Consider using smart energy tools such as Synergi’s Smart Climate to automatically adjust your heat pump’s temperature to match cheaper hours conveniently.

Synergi Smart Climate is a fully automated way of optimizing heat pump usage according to a user's preferred indoor temperature and spot electricity prices. When the prices rise, temperature is lowered slightly without sacrificing comfort. In turn, when prices decrease, the target temperature is increased. This helps to increase savings, which can help you save up to 20% of total heat pump electricity costs.

Smart Climate works without costly hardware installations or compromising comfort indoors. The feature natively supports wifi-enabled Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Daikin (and more) heat pumps or any other brand connected via a Sensibo (infrared AC controller). You can check all the supported heating and cooling brands and models here.
