Synergi's newest EV Experience & Smart Charging Finland 2025 report reveals that annual savings for electric vehicle drivers using smart charging have increased once more, with the highest recorded savings per user reaching €292. The report also highlights the top challenges for EV drivers: the hassle of managing multiple charging apps and controlling charging costs.
Helsinki, Finland (30 January 2025) - Synergi, a Finnish tech company dedicated to helping consumers optimize energy usage and reduce their bills with the Synergi app, has released its latest report, EV Experience & Smart Charging Finland 2025.
The report reveals that EV owners are achieving record-breaking savings through smart charging technology. Top users save up to €292 annually on charging costs (a 24% increase from the previous year).
Based on direct feedback from EV drivers and insights from Synergi's Smart Charging feature, the report also provides valuable data on drivers' challenges, motivations, and behaviors with spot and fixed-price contracts.
The report was drafted using data from over 60,000 smart charging sessions by Synergi’s users during 2024 and survey responses from 220 EV drivers across various Finnish online EV driver communities.
Key findings include:
Motivations for buying an EV: Both spot and fixed-price users are motivated by fuel and maintenance savings and an improved driving experience. Spot-price users, however, are more motivated by reducing their environmental impact, with 53% listing it as a key factor, compared to just 37% of fixed-price users.
Challenges and needs of EV owners: Managing multiple charging apps and optimizing charging costs are top concerns for both energy price contract groups. Even fixed-price users, typically less engaged with energy price fluctuations, wanted to optimize charging times to lower charging costs.
Charging behaviors & price sensitivity: Charging habits are consistent across both energy contract types, with over 80% of EV owners preferring home charging. Spot price users are significantly more price-sensitive, with 73% regularly checking prices before charging. However, 64% of fixed-price users rarely, if ever, check prices before plugging in.
Smart charging savings & popular EV brands: Smart charging is helping Finnish EV drivers save more, with the top savings rising from €236 in 2023 to €292 in 2024. Tesla remains the leading EV brand for smart charging, followed by Volkswagen and Škoda.
Smart charging’s role in demand response: As more EV drivers embrace smart charging, there’s a growing potential to alleviate grid congestion. Charging behaviors, like delayed charging during off-peak hours, are already contributing to demand shifting, which shows how impactful smart charging is on grid stability. The report also revealed EV drivers are highly interested in participating in demand response programs when incentives are offered. As many as 90% of respondents said they were either very likely to participate or at least considering it.
“We hope this report serves as a starting point to inspire the development of more products and services that meet the evolving needs of EV drivers,” says Antti Hämmäinen, CEO & Co-founder of Synergi. “What’s better is how willing EV drivers are to test out new services that could benefit the stability of energy grids.”
